The Renaissance
Renaissance: re-birth
- cultural growth in the 14-16 centuries
- promoted the development of a more sophisticated urban life
- morals and art were mainly influenced and based of off the Romans and Greeks
the humanists
Beliefs:
- scholars and literary figures of the renaissance
- focused on literature, history, and moral philosophy
- deeply faithful to Christianity
- translated Christian text
- promoted the values, of early christianity, to the growing urban societies
- classical Roman and Greek writing styles were used in translation and their own works
- together with the Byzantine scholars they created a large body of translated Roman and Greek works
Humanist Moral Thought
- the Humanists followed Greek and Roman values
- however they mixed Greek values and Roman values with medieval ethics
- medieval ethics taught that monks and nuns, and ascetic form of life, was the most honourable
- however the Greeks and Romans believed that they could coincide strong religious worship with public affairs
- the Humanists in turn believed that public and personal affairs could coincide with religious faith and practice
- this fit very well because many societies were experiencing extreme urban growth meaning an importance of business and societal affairs
Comparison
Scholasticism and Humanism both had high points in the 14 century and originated or was greatly influenced by Greek philosophy. However Humanism was based off of Cicero's teachings, whereas Scholasticism was based on Aristotle's teachings. Scholasticism worked more for creating educated theologians, doctors, lawyers, and Humanism worked on creating citizens with a balance of religion and public affairs.
